Getting to know you: Ciarán McMahon

12/06/2018

The Housing Festival 2018 is being organised by CIH Futures NI; a group of ambitious and talented young housing professionals who are eager to show the fun side of the housing sector! In this ‘get to know’ series of blogs we will introduce each member of CIH Futures NI individually – so that you can get to know them a little bit better! Next up, it’s Ciarán McMahon...

First, tell us a little bit about yourself!

My name is Ciarán McMahon. I am 31 years old and hail from the glorious town of Lurgan, Co. Armagh. I have worked for Housing Executive since 2005 (I'll tell you more about that shortly) and in my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, and watching/following all things GAA.

Tell us about your job and organisation...

I have enjoyed many job roles in my 13 years with the Housing Executive. I began my career as a clerical officer and counter/customer services assistant in Belfast before progressing to roles such as a Housing Adviser in Homelessness Services and a Functional Training Officer in Housing Services right through to my current job as an  Assistant Principal Officer in Housing Services helping to manage the delivery of the largest training programme in the organisation's history.

The Housing Executive is a huge organisation, as well as being the UK's largest social landlord managing over 85,000 homes across Northern Ireland, it has the responsibility for a wide range of statutory functions - too many to write in a short blog!

One other thing I can tell you about the Housing Executive is that they support and encourage staff to progress in their career, I have completed qualifications such as the Post Graduate Diploma in Housing Studies, PRINCE 2 Practitioner, HNC in Business, Train the Trainer qualifications and the CIH level 3 cert in Housing.

What is the best thing about CIH membership?

The best thing about CIH membership is having the latest information about changes in the Housing sector at your fingertips! As well as that, having CIH membership gives you the accreditation of being a Housing professional and gives you the opportunity to meet like-minded people through training courses and groups like CIH NI Futures.

What is your favorite thing about working in housing?

The best thing about working in housing has to be the ability to make a positive difference in people's lives, especially  those who are vulnerable or experiencing difficulties and hard times in their lives. My favourite role was working in the organisation's Homelessness Services Unit helping the most vulnerable to either find homes or sustain their accommodation and I now enjoy training new staff to take the same approach.
